Alice Springs has long supported and welcomed a diverse and thriving community, whilst also serving as a vital hub for the large itinerant population that flow in and out of Alice on their way to various outstations and Uluru.
The traditional owners and largest group that make up the Alice Springs inhabitants are the indigenous Central Arrernte people, who have been resident for more than 30,000 years!
Today, Alice welcomes visitors and new residents alike from all of the world, with considerable contributions from Filipino, Indian and African populations, as well as Island Nations, European, the United States and of course, our neighbours from New Zealand.
Aside from this being great news for foodies, (with Alice boasting a wide selection of exotic food choices) these existing and new residents provide essential skills that contribute to the success of Alice Springs. For example, Filipino medical professionals play an essential role in Alice Springs Hospital, which is only 800m from the Alice Stars property development. It is not just a skilled position that Filipinos fill – famous for their love of music, it is very common to see Filipino singers and guitarist providing delighting at local venues.
Whilst Filinipo migration to the area continues, this is by no means a new development. (Filipino migration to the Northern Territory started more than 100 years ago.) The Mabuhay Multicultural Association is an Alice Springs-based Filipino group, with membership extending beyond to Yulara, Tennant Creek, Renner’s Springs, Waite River Station and other areas around Alice Springs.
The association has for decades welcomed new Filipino arrivals, bringing them together for social occasions, whilst actively sharing their rich heritage and traditions with the wider Alice Springs community.
And whilst Alice Springs welcomes many residents as part of regional migration schemes (whereby arrivals must commit to working in remote areas for at least two years) the significant amount of enquiries from ethnic Filipinos regarding the Alice Stars development suggests that many are here to stay for the long term, to which we say:
